It's time for another pangolin fridge magnet and this time it's actually 2 pangolins in 1!
I'm really fond of this tiny duo turned out and I love the twig. I'll definatly make more magnets that include twigs! %D
The mother is covered by almost 200 scales and her baby by around 70 tiny scales of various sizes. Each scale has been cut out by hand, cleaned of fuzzy edges before being glued in place. The sizes range between 2-10 mm.
The bodies are split into several sections. This allows me to fit the scales seamlessly and creates a 3D-effect. The mother consists of six separate sections (body, legs, neck and the tongue) and the little one of three (body and legs). Baby and the tongue can be removed.
Very cute! Not many people seem to know about pangolins, so this is a really nice idea. Even me, I'd never even heard of them until using a computer with Ubuntu the other day.
It all started out with introducing Willy the Pangolin to my Siesta jungle (a series of cartoon pictures/crafts you can find in my gallery) in my new ID-picture two years ago. As I had made a plush version of Cornelius the Elephant and his ancient relative Henry, I also played with the thought what it would be like to make a pangolin plush. With the prospect of making and sewing on all those scales I confined the idea to the back of my head, but eventually I started anyway and half a year later I finished the first pangolin plush. He instantly got very popular here on DA and I decided to use his fame to help spread the word about the real pangolin's dire situation (of which I had become aware of while working on the Willy plush) and put together a collage titled "The unknown peril of the pangolins". Although I had sworn never to do anything with scales again, I ended up changing one of my old patterns to make a more easily made chibi-version of my pangolin plush as part of a trade (the trader would spread the word and raise some money for the pangolin's cause and after donating them she would get the chibi-pangolin in gratitude of her effort). Later commissioned chibi-pangolins still have a part of the price donated. :3 The latest addition was the pangolin fridgies who are made from scraps and they have had their full amount donated so far. ^^
You've even got your own pangolin character Willy? That's awesome! I've seen a few jungle pics on your profile page but I had no idea those are your own characters with names and stuff. Anyway I think you're doing a great job in helping poor pangolins through your art.
Thanks! Yeah, each picture brings new characters and new names as I don't plan the pictures in detail. Willy came into being the other way arounf though. For once I had the idea for an entire story and Willy is the main character along side with Al'Capone the Tiger in that chapter. :3
